U.S. cancels 26 Chinese-operated flights

Breaking news, the U.S. Department of Transportation issued the latest directive. As the Chinese authorities continued to take a series of circuit breaker measures against U.S. airlines, U.S. airlines suspend operations of 26 scheduled flights between China and the United States. In response, the U.S. decided to suspend 26 U.S. flights to China operated by four Chinese airlines. The order takes effect immediately and will last until the end of September

The U.S. says its overarching goal is to improve the environment in which carriers on both sides can fully exercise their bilateral rights to maintain a competitive balance between U.S. and Chinese airlines in the scheduled passenger service market.

According to Reuters, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington responded by saying that the U.S. Department of Transportation acted extremely irresponsibly and grounded Chinese airline flights without grounds. The spokesman said that China’s circuit breaker mechanism is open and fair, applicable to Chinese and foreign airlines, and consistent with the aviation agreement between the two sides.
